History
The original National Bank of Commerce was reorganized in 1997, which is when NMB Bank first appeared. Three new organizations, NBC Holdings Limited, National Bank of Tanzania (1997), and National Microfinance Bank, were created under a law passed by Parliament. NMB Bank started up with a strong emphasis on savings accounts and a small lending portfolio.
NMB Bank underwent privatized in 2005. Up until that point, the bank’s sole owner, the Tanzanian government, sold 49% of its stock to the Dutch banking institution Rabobank. For NMB Bank, this collaboration represented a critical turning point.
